The sale was finalised and we were keen to check out the shoeshop. Emily was already in London and we’d arranged to meet her there before heading for Guémené.


boatWe had spent a week on the narrowboat and picked up the extra worker along the Grand Union Canal.


shopIt was still light and the clock on the library was chiming its last strokes for the night when we finally reached Guémené at 10pm.

barnandpotIn the overgrown garden we retrieved the old stone roller and found a huge rusting cast iron pot under the brambles.

throughdoorsAt a used furniture yard we had found a set of six plain but elegant chairs with battered red seats, for only 10 francs each.


fireplacechairNow that all the mess from uncovering the old fireplace was cleared up, it was time to install the new phone and the laptop using a small door as the tabletop.


gardenWe sat on the stones with a glass of red and looked with great satisfaction at the emerging garden, with the western sun still high in the sky.
